Plain English

What is a CMS?

CMS stands for content management system. It is the difference between emailing a developer every time you change your phone number, and changing it yourself in thirty seconds. Here is what that means for a small business site - without the jargon.

The plain English version

A CMS is the back end of your website - a private page only you can log into, where the words and pictures are shown as fields you type into. You change Open 8am to 5pm into Open 7am to 4pm, hit save, and the live site updates. No code, no developer, no waiting a week.

What matters just as much is what it does not touch. A CMS changes content. It does not change the design. You are not dragging boxes around a canvas or rebuilding your layout on a Sunday night - that is a page builder, a different tool with a different set of problems. Edit through a CMS and the layout you paid for stays exactly where it is.

Think of it as the difference between editing a document and redesigning the page it is printed on. You change the words. The typography, spacing and structure stay put - because those are the parts that make a site look professional, and the parts most people accidentally break the moment they are handed a drag-and-drop editor.

What ours actually gives you

Ours is a simple set of fields over the same hand-coded site. Headings, service copy, FAQs, prices, contact details, opening hours - the things that genuinely change in a small business. You log in, change the field, save.

It is not WordPress. There is no plugin list to keep patched, no database to break, and no admin dashboard with fourteen menu items you have never opened. Fewer moving parts is the entire reason the site stays fast and stays hard to hack.

It is a one-off +$100 AUD + GST. Not a subscription. Once it is yours, it is yours.

Side by side

The same edits, three ways.

What you want to change With our CMS With WordPress No CMS
Phone number or opening hours You, in a minute You, in a minute Email us, a day or two
A new service or FAQ You, in a few minutes You, plus a plugin or two Email us, a day or two
Page layout or design Not possible - by design You, and this is where sites go wrong Email us
Ongoing cost Nothing after the one-off Hosting, plugins and your time Nothing
Risk of breaking the design Very low High None
The only question that matters

Do I need one?

Be honest with yourself about which column you are in. There is no wrong answer, and we would rather you skipped it than paid for something you never open.

Worth it if
  • You change prices, hours or service lists a few times a year or more.
  • You want to add a service, an FAQ or a team member without booking anyone in.
  • You are the only person who knows the answers, and you would rather type them than brief someone.
  • You have been quoted a monthly maintenance fee purely to make small text edits.
Skip it if
  • Your content is stable - the same three services, unchanged for years.
  • You are expecting a canvas to redesign the site. Ours is deliberately fields only.
  • You have not launched yet. Build the site first, then add the CMS when you feel the friction.
  • You are on a tight budget and the money is better spent on the site itself.
Add the CMS - +$100 AUD + GST (+ GST)

Add it with the build or a year later - same price. Prefer to ask first? Send us a question.

Beyond the flat rate

When a simple CMS is not enough

Some Australian businesses genuinely outgrow a small site - multiple locations, hundreds of pages, a catalogue that changes daily, several people editing at once. That is not a $500 AUD + GST job, and pretending otherwise would waste your money. That work is scoped and quoted separately through Underdog Digital, the agency behind this service. Same people, same standards, bigger scope.

Different service, different prices, same people. Nothing on this site changes if you never click it.

Is a CMS the same as a page builder?
No, and the difference matters. A CMS changes content inside a design that stays put. A page builder - Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, Elementor - lets you rebuild the layout yourself, which sounds like freedom and usually means a site that gets slower and messier every time somebody edits it. We do CMS. We are not fans of page builders for lead-generation sites.
Do I actually need one?
Only if you will use it. If your prices, hours or services move a few times a year, it pays for itself the first time you avoid waiting on us. If your content barely changes, skip it and keep the money.
Does it slow the site down or make it less secure?
No. It is not a database sitting on your hosting and there are no third-party plugins running. The pages are still plain static files, which is exactly why the site stays fast and there is so little to attack.
Can I add it later?
Yes - +$100 AUD + GST whenever you want it, at build time or a year after launch. The price does not change and we do not charge extra for deciding later.
Can you just build me a WordPress site instead?
Yes. If WordPress is a hard requirement, or you have an existing site you have to keep, we build and maintain that through our agency - properly scoped rather than squeezed into a flat rate.
Two ways to go

Buy the site. Decide on the CMS whenever.

The website is $500 AUD + GST, once. The CMS is +$100 AUD + GST whenever you want it - at checkout or a year later. Skipping it costs you nothing later.
